In Tree Hill, North Carolina, the most prevalent name is Scott. Dan Scott (Paul Johansson) is a former high school basketball star who got a basketball scholarship to UNC-a scholarship that caused him to leave behind his pregnant girlfriend Karen Roe (Moira Kelly), who would give birth to his son Lucas. Lucas grows up in a loving household with his mother and his uncle Keith(Craig Scheffer), who always envied his little brother Dan for having such an amazing girlfriend in Karen. Meanwhile, at college Dan's basketball career ends, but at least he has a new girlfriend, Deb(Barbara Alyn Woods)-and another baby on the way, Nathan (James Lafferty). Dan returns his family to Tree Hill, where Nathan is the bigtime basketball star at school. However, after a stunt that gets half of the team suspended, Coach Whitey Durham (Barry Corbin) recruits Lucas, the outcast brother. Quickly Lucas and Nathan's lives begin to mix not only on the basketball court, as Lucas finds himself attracted to Nathan's girlfriend Peyton (Hilarie Burton) while Nathan uses Lucas's best friend Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) to anger him. Throw in Peyton's fiesty best friend Brooke (Sophia Bush), and Lucas's friend from the river court, Mouth (Lee Norris), and watch the story unfold before your eyes.
